Why do hard drives die? Hard drives are the most common part to fail on most computers. This is due to the mechanical nature and the moving parts. The actuator arm can get stuck, the platter can get scratched, and any one of the tiny components can fail resulting in read errors, and even system failure. It only takes a few grams of force to cause a hard drive failure! Moving your notebook around while it's on and the drive is spinning is one of the best ways to wear it out.
